Welcome!
Nancy Lou Riccio and Dave Sayad produce
handmade driftwood furniture and wildlife art at their workshop, THE
STUDIO AT EAST RIVER ROAD, in Guilford,
Connecticut
.
Each item is one of a kind, made of woods
from the beaches and rivers of
North America
with the addition of some milled hardwoods for table tops, including
cherry, walnut, butternut ,maple, oak and cedar.
The wood is used in its natural
color, unstained, finished with tung and teak oil to protect and preserve
it. The textures added by beaver’s teeth, old saw marks, holes and
weathering created by water and wind give each piece added
character.
All elements of this furniture are mortised
and tenoned and doweled; no exposed screws appear. Waterproof glue is used
so that each piece can be placed indoors or outdoors.
It
is equally at home in beach cottages, mountain cabins, forest Lodges, or
in the city apartments of those who yearn for the country or just an
unusual accent piece.
The
carvings are made of found driftwood or basswood, researched and painted
as they appear in nature. Acrylic paints are used. Carvings range from
shorebirds to working decoys to fish and aquatic mammals.
Some
of the furniture is painted with wildlife or botanical subjects.
Dave
designs and builds the furniture. Nancy Lou, a former wildlife
illustrator, paints and carves. Together they work on the finishing of the
furniture, and finding the driftwood to create the pieces.
